The dimension for standard bridle tieing point  is under 5~10(mm) from the both side top edges of Bangpae when spread bridle thread out toward top edges.The smaller this dimension, the agiler the Bangpae activity and become get less wind pressure. Below figure shows typical bridle related dimensions for the 400(mm) x 470 (mm)  one.When strong windy days or when we want to get extreme agility, it possibly reach minus(-) dimension, i.e., tieing point goes up those two side top edges.

ps) All of bridle line lengths described below are result in attacking angle. The larger this attacking angle, more stable, more wind pressure receiving the kite.Below figure shows criterion just for the Bangpae of 40(cm)x47(cm), and lower bridle point 10.25(cm) from kite bottom. 

More tips for more agile Bangpae are firstly to get a little bit smaller aspect ratio one than standard aspect ratio(=kite length/kite width(=span)) 1.2, the smaller aspect ratio , the agiler in Bangpae agility.You deserve to try it. Secondly, to bend central area of upper half diagonals,i.e, midpoint of side top edge and spars cross point, by rubbing them, before we glue the  diagonals. 

Thirdly, we need to use as much as possible elastic and light spars those are 3~5 years old bambooes that were cut during cold winter, dried at least 1~2 years under airly shadow environment after winter cut, properly gas torch tempered.


All kites have some of unbalance between left and right side just after kite made.
We call taking balance REMEDY in Korea.I want to show you the typical remedy methods below.
First figure shows how we can remedy the unbalance between left and right, and second is remedy method for the tracking problem by making waist weak.Kite doesn't go straight and quickly changes its moving direction without line releasing when wind rapidly the reel, it means waist is stronger than normal.Waist massaging enables the waist elasticity to be weaker. We need to be careful not to tear paper during massaging them.

ps) Two figures below are while we see kite face, with downing the wind(=wind blowing to our back) and kite face. Remedy principle is very simple for us to remove the unequally coming wind pressure between two sides. Kite going left(=counter clockwise) means more wind pressure added on right side of kite face. We should make less wind added on right side of kite. How can we accomplish this? It's to make right side spar more rounded(=bent) by massaging it, and it enables to come wind on right side passing by over right kite ends with less wind pressure giving on right side kite face.

Moving patterns of lozenge type fighter kites and Bangpae are totally different, this moves upward but diamond kite tend to come directly near towards fliers when wind reel rapidly with kite head upward and kite being front of fliers. Maybe it's because of the differences on lift force and bridle method. Korean fighters can't help cherishing making Bangpae a kind of spiritual excercise.

Made Bangpae surface using glue jig can be a little bit withered, It can be simply cured by wet aging.Korean paper can absorb moisture and wrinkly surface result in tightly spread out by the elastic reaction of glued spars.Without central volume up using jig or plastic bottle cap-central towered around 30 mm-, this reaction couldn't be appeared.Flat pasting is also disadvantageous in Bangpae's quick turing action required as a fighting kite.

1. To put made Bangpae in wet shaded environment like rest room or veranda for several days.

2. To blow your breath on the upper diagonal parts.
3. To inject water fog on the upper diagonal parts.

I wouldn't like to recommend you the last method, because sometimes it can cause messing up the drawn symbol,nail marking and pasted bond.

Prepare 3 times length of two arm wide opened line for bridle and then straighten it.

Tie in this way.


Tie the other side knot.

Keypoint is to put the left hand index finger under the string and to tie with right hand.

See carefully the tie knot method, knot not released by itself,self tied with this method.


Head bowing


Bowing can be stabilized by spreading out several times.


Adequate bow depth for the 400(mm) x 470(mm) Bangpae is about 35~40(mm).


Cut the bridle line as below figure.


For the 40(cm) x 47(cm) Bangpae, punch bottom bridle point at about 10(cm) from the kite bottom, and upper fake bridle point at about 9(cm) from the kite top.


This upper fake bridle point is used for preventing spine bent over under the strong wind speed over 6(m/s). This fake line is about 1~2(cm) longer than three of the others when pull out the bridle line.


Tie the central knot.


This knotting point should be coincident with bottom bridle point when spread out the bridle line.


Bottom bridle point knot.


Knot point needs to be near both of upper edge points when spread out the bridle line.The upper this point, the faster Bangpae reaction speed.Standard knot position is around 5(mm) lower from this point.


The upper fake bridle point knot.


Fake bridle line must be a little bit longer than three of the others,actually Bangpae is 3 points bridle.


Could you see the fake bridle line droops a little?


Tie a swivel.

Bangpae bridle is 3 point one not that of 4, the fake one at center upside is just to prevent spine bent against strong wind pressure.

Step 1.

Prepare thread to be duplicated that length is about 1.5 times of head width or kite diagonal.

Step 2.

Make a double thread knot with thread length of from kite center to bottom corner end.

Step 3.

Tie at start point between kite upper and center with double thread prepared on step 2.

Step 4.

Drag thread from the point of step 3 via right side bottom corner end to left upper corner end.

Step 5.

Overlap main thread with that of prepared on step 1 at the step 4 end point, turn kite over with keeping the threads don’t move, wind threads 3 turns clockwise to the spar end, pull main thread toward me, and then make a clockwise ring against left index finger, next insert the made ring into stick out corner spar, finally pull out to tie main threads with right fingers while left 3 fingers-middle,ring,the little-fixing corner threads.

Step 6.

Drag thread from the point of step 5 via upper center down 22~25 (mm) to left upper corner end while thread tension taut, then turn kite over again with keeping the threads don’t move, wind threads 2 turns clockwise to stick out corner spar, pull main thread toward me, and then make a closckwise ring against left index finger, next insert made ring into stick out corner spar, finally pull out to tie main threads with right fingers while left 3 fingers-middle,ring,the little-fixing corner threads.

Step 7.

Wind thread 1 turn to the stick out corner spar of the step 6,spread out string to make bow string stable.

Step 8.

Drag thread from the point of step 7 via bottom left corner end to bottom right corner end, then make a double thread knot at here with thread length of from this point to the opposite kite center hole end.

Step 9.

Tie a knot at bottom bridal point  with double thread prepared on step 8.

Step 10.

Make a 4 thread overlap knot and this knot point should coincident to the end point of step 9 and 10 mm down from the upper corner ends when pull out thread up and down, and the thread from the start point of step 3 must be a little bit droop status.

Step 11.

Tie a swivel.

It's better to check and correct the spar straightness before processing.


To paste bond only on the spine upside part and give bond much onto the top edge.

The reason why glue to the top part of the spine before passing it is to form a kind of truss structure to resisit well against wind pressure.It's kind of screw fix between the head and the spine.

So is that between the head and diagonals crossing points with fit cut and giving bonds.

One more reason of fit cut is make thinner this point.No fit cut makes bridling awkward and not tight tie.Plus, added bonding to both delta area to reinforce this truss purpuse.
Without this, Bangpae truss would become weaker by the wind pressue.


Then make spine go through beneath diagonals with bond pasted part upward and being alert not to tear paper during passing spine through.


Paste bond on the left bottem part.


To turn over spine and check and correct it whether get out of from/to the reference line.


Give much bond near the cross point  and paint bond on rear cover paper to prepare cover paper gluing.


Massage slightly onto the upside central cover paper.


So  is the waist gluing with spine.

 I call this procedure volume up gluing that gives tension forces between spars and paper to help the paper spread and having better Bangpae function.Below is showing ready to go next with nail marking.We can get same effect of central up with 2.5~3(cm) height plastic bottle cap, putting it under the two diagonals crossing point while we process this step,but this method needs an assistant who presses down the point of flat pliers in below picture. 


The next step is pencil marking to display bonding range.


Followed step is to paste bond on the upside left part,should be careful not to miss bonding to the connecting point of the former pasted,dried out.


To paste well the bottom area, too.


To pull the paper by thumb and index finger with more strength on the right hand,you can see the diagonal on right hand  lies downside, it's to get 4 edges contact well onto the floor after gluing.


And then, step on two of bottom edges and make both hands be free.


To check whether diagonals get out of from the reference lines and correct if necessary.Processing nail marking on to diagonals with paper scraps, and wait around 2~3 minutes till bond dried.


We can see the volume up gluing completed ones below.

This chapter shows the way head and the upper first half diagonals glue onto paper.Glue jig will be used in next chapter.

Pre-condition : Fit cut between head and diagonals contact surfaces must be completed before this chapter.


Tip for more agile Bangpae  About 1(cm) deep pre-bent diagonal at around 10(cm) apart from the side top for the 400(mm)head Bangpae that the index finger points out at <Fig.7> by rubbing skin side of diagonal spars with thum helps Banpae to be more agile.But it's not easy to glue well the pre-bent diagonals than no bent one.


Step1 : First,check and remedy the straightness of head, then paste wooden bond on the rear side of head<Fig.1>, then glue it on paper along the head reference line.<Fig.2><Fig.3>

Step2 : First,check and remedy the straightness of diagonals<Fig.4>, then paste wooden bond on the rear side of diagonals about 12(cm) long from diagonal top<Fig.5>,  to the the point that index finger points out at <Fig.7>, then glue the left diagonal first, the right one next on paper. 

cf) This diagonals gluing order is correct to the right-handed person.See the result at <Fig.7>. With this we must pull stronger the right diagonal end when glue the rest part of diagonals in next chapter to prevent this diagonal tail end float up a little while putting Bangpae on the floor after gluing up.





The rest parts of diagonals will be bonded in next chapter on the glue jig.

Step3 : Put sufficient bond to the head and diagonals cross point inside<Fig.6> and then paste wooden bond on both parts of three parted kitetop paper, then overlap-glue them on the head and diagonals like <Fig.7>.




Step4 : Take a nail mark on both front and rear surface of paper.<Fig.8>

The next picture shows nail mark just after gluing while bond undried to get better kite external appearence.Thumb and forefinger nails must be parallel throughout it.


Next pictures are first half upside diagonal only pasted ones, then we should leave them more or less a  day untill bond fully dried.

Glue jig has been contrived on the long journey of ceaseless efforts by Bangpae fighters.By their experience, Bangpae fighters have come to know central part volume up gluing is helpful to get better Bangpae reaction and elastic paper surface.At early times, they got it by putting bottle cap or dish under two diagonals crossing point.Its technics and methods have been continuosly developed and resulted in gluing jig invention by Woo,Hyun-Taek in 2002. This is very convenient to get central part volume up despite of to the novices.

It's said by Oh,Je-Hwan that two-pieces of this kind of jig was developed by Choi,Tae-Young(Ex- rugby player of Yonsei university) in 1980s who had reigned Korean kite fighting world,but he hide it to the others, and as he got older, Mr.Choi divulged his know-how to Mr.Oh who has also transfered it to Mr.Woo,Hyun-Taek.

Related factors to the speedy Bangpae action are as belows.

Firstly bridle knot point-the upper this point, the faster the reaction of Bangpae-, secondly bottom bridle point, the higher it, the faster the Bangpae reaction, thirdly, center volume up spar pasting with gluing jig or bottle cap, fourthly diagonal shoulder pre-bending before gluing,fifthly older and tempered bamboo using or not, sixthly head bowing, finally center hole size that influences the reaction speed after quick line releasing-We Korean call it Twigim, the bigger center hole, the faster stabilization after Twigim-.

One of the unique points of Bangpae is the head bowing,it makes Bangpae having more resistive structure against wind pressure.Too deep head bowing results in weak string pressure and bad reaction.Head bowing too be related with the Bangpae action.

The Great inventor Mr.Woo,Hyun-Taek invented Columbus egg for Bangpae.


His has flat area in central part result in a little bit smaller angles between plates compared to that of 168 degree of mine,personally I think it possibly influences something different to the diagonals.

Below is my type.

Next picture shows the effect of using this jig that makes glued Bangpae be central part volume up without head(leading edge spar) bowing at all. I've seen Japanese Tahara kite also has its central part volume up,but it's got by different method that ties string through each spar hole.

Waist is one of the important factors to decide the tracking-going straight- and quick turning performance in Bangpae.Absolutely the most important spar is diagonals, but so is the waist. You can see the differences between the curve patterns in below figures.The strength of center part is different, the top is weakest at center part, the bottom strongest. What kind of differences could you imagine? We can say the top type absorbs shocks well, it means weaker center helps Bangpae to ride on the wind well and makes its tracking performance be better.On the contrary, the bottom is better in its turning speed because its center is strong.The red pattern is focused on making the center part extremly weak.The bottom is that of horse's hoof pattern.Personally I like those of the top and middle one. As Bangpae size goes bigger from 400 x 470, the lower pattern is needed.Most important thing is to harmonize together between each spars. Elastic tension and curve pattern of each spars! Suitable tension of waist for the 400 x 470 sized Bangpae is around 15 (gram.force) and it also processed by using groove blade.

 To process the waist by using grooved blade.

To see and check the bending curve pattern, you can see the left side of below picture is thicker than left side, you need to scrape more the thicker left side.

Finally, check whether overall curve pattern is you need and the curve radius is same in both side.Recommended tension is around 15(gram.force) for the 400 x 470 sized Bangpae as I told above.

I describe my way briefly on waist processing below with pictures from tempering to machining.Tempering -> Straightening -> Successive half split -> machinning.

Head spar for Bangpae processing might be almost same with the diagonal spar of lozenge type kite like Hongkong,American,Indian kite,etc, that is, zero curvature and weight difference between left and right side from the center.I've seen somebody who put the head spar on very sharp knife blade to check it.Proper tension of head for the 400 x 470 sized Bangpae is around 500 (gram.force).One of the unique points of Bangpae is the head bowing,it makes Bangpae having more resistive structure against wind pressure.Too deep head bowing results in weak string pressure.Actually related factor with Bangpae speed as a fighter kite is firstly bridle knot point-the upper, the faster-, secondly bottom bridle point, thirdly center volume up spar bonding with gluing jig or bottle cap, fourthly diagonal shoulder pre-bending before gluing,fifthly long tempered bamboo using or not, sixthly head bowing, finally center hole size that influences the reaction speed after quick line releasing.We Korean call it Twigim, the bigger center hole, the faster stabilization after Tweegim.

It needs usually no bending taper for the Bangpae headspar. I rarely have seen people who makes it thinner a liitle bit towards those spar tips.I have tried both, and I sensuously felt the uniform thickness one through the whole length is a little bit agiler.Head spar sectional shape for head,spine,diagonals is half-round.For the waist is thin square, but the corner had better be champered with the grooved blade.

Appropriate curve pattern for spine is same with that of diagonals that is,curvature center lies at three-fifth from top toward tail.Proper tension of spine for the 400 x 470 sized Bangpae is around 350 (gram.force). Bamboo node of spine also should be located at the upper one-fourth position of Bangpae center hole.

1. Take length margin than the kite width and height before scraping.

2. Sectional shapes of Head,Spine,Diagonal are all the same, half circle.But the waist is thin rectangle.

3. We need to cut the skin side on the both end of head flat to be fit well with diagonals.

4. Refer the bending curvature of the Head below.

5. Refer the bending curvature of the Spine below.

6. Refer the flat fit cut inner side of diagonals that are fit with the Head below.

Diagonals are the most important spars to the Bangpae performance, key factors should be taken in a pair of diagonal are adequate,exactly same elastic forces and coincident curve pattern between two diagonals.We've come to know the best center of bending curvature lies at around three-fifth from the head toward tail side.The below figure shows ideal curve pattern and elastic force for the 400(mm) x 470(mm) sized Bangpae.It takes long to get this condition satisfying diagonals at beginner stage.I recommend you to use two of raw spars from same part of same bamboo.Bamboo spar differs in physical properties including elastic coefficient and response time by each bambooes, especially by the species and age differences.One more thing to be careful is bamboo node should be exist on the upper one-fourth position of Bangpae center hole.

You can see below diagonal processed by Park,Chan-Young, the top level Bangpae fighter in Korea.The left in below picture is tail side.

To check whether the curvarture of two diagonal is coincident and tension is correct.

You can see at the below picture the central part of front bamboo is a little bit thicker than the rear.

Finally, a set of tension OK, same curvatured diagonal is completed.

2. To straighten both side lines from node and cool down them for 10 minutes.

Bamboo is one of the very important materials influence Bangpae performance.We Korean concluded best bamboo for Bangpae is 3~5 years old,cut during cold winter and cultivated at latitute around 35.We've tried to use the longer between near joints bamboo from subtropical zones,but has realized it's not suitable to Bangpae because of the comparatively weak elasticity.To get more elastic property with same bamboo spar,we generally perform torch blow tempering on the skin side. With other choices except quick tempering, far better bamboo is rarely acquired under following conditions. First, several hundred years passed interior roof bamboo materials lie on a little bit apart from the right above fireplace,it's very slowly tempered  and shows dark brown colored skin.Second, long years passed yellow ocher fence bamboo materials buried inside the fence,it's naturally seasoned  one by the time and tide.Korean kite fighters had been making sectional shape rectangular till around 1965,and had come to know round section-exactly half moon shape- is most effective for slight strong,elastic spars but processing round shape with plane blade was very difiicult,somebody invented this groove knife,at last all of Korean kite fighters have been using groove knife from around 2000.The 1st inventor of is not known yet, and with what kind of knife making it round in the 1960s is also not clear.

It's convenient to use cut-out jig with gimlet markings.And outside overlap gluing is recommended to reinforce paper endurance.
We had better prepare half-paper tailoring masters of every size.


1. Put this tailoring master on half folded paper to punch marks with gimlet.

2. Draw lines follow after these marks and then complete paper cut.

3. Make gimlet scratch lines onto outer lines to be folded.

4. Center hole cut and quadrisection it .

5. Hemming with glue.


6. Tail edge overlap hemming.

7. Symbol decoration with paint brush and Chinese ink etc.

8. Ironing if necessary.

9. Finished.


# The method without tailor master.

1. Draw a horizontal line of top width.

2. Draw a bisectional vertical line of kite height with straight square and triangular rule.

3. Draw a horizontal line of kite bottom sidth with straight square and triangular rule.

4. Draw a straight line from left top edge point to left tail edge point with sraight square.

5. Draw a straight line from right top edge point to right tail edge point with sraight square.

6. Draw two diagonal lines from top edge point to tail edge point with sraight square.

7. Draw a horizontal line at crossing point with sraight square and triangular rule.

8. Draw hem lines, upper over lap and trim lines.

1. Special tools and accessaries.

    Grooved knife, Double-edged knife, Whetstone, Sharpener for groove blade

Double edged knife used to split spars.


Bond : Two-liquid mixing type quick-drying epoxy araldite bond.


Following script is by Dominick,Jenkins.He had made this knife for himself and experienced so much about it.His comments must be very helpful to whom would try it.

Making and Using the Korean Kite Knife

Some initial comments.

I enjoyed making this knife and it is great to use. Here are some things I learnt along the way.

First, unless you are good with a angle grinder - I recommend that you get the sadvick saw blade cut up by someone who does or find a metal shop that can use a laser or electric sparking machine to do the cutting. There are two reasons for this, the first is that angle grinders are dangerous machines and the second is unless you are happy with using them it is hard to cut through the blade accurately.

Second, the grinding of the circular cutting edges with a high speed pencil dye grinder is realatively easy. The machine itself is not so expensive and neither is the air pump to supply it. I had difficulty finding the right abrasive heads - they need to go at 50,000 revolutions per minute -- but they can be got from: Meister Abrasives UK, e-mail tele: 44 1327 703 813.

Thirdly, it is also important to grind the knife edge right. I have only just learned how to do this. You have to brind the edge of the knife steadily in to the edge of the grinding wheel at a low angle and let it rest there so that the knife edge is a thin triangular wedge and not a slightly curved wedge - this makes all the difference in getting a sharp cutting knife edge.

Some more to follow.

Finally, I had a difficult experience using the knife with some bamboo -- until I found out from Peter that the knife does not work very well on bamboo that has only seasoned for one year and/or is quick growing tropical bamboo. So it is crucial to get the older two to three years seasoned temperate zone bamboo.

Below knifes are designed, being made 100 pieces and will be presented to Korean Kite Fliers Society members  in the early of 2016 to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of the Great Mr.M,H,Park's death.

Aspect ratio(kite length/kite width) has been changed from 1.5 to the recent standard 1.2, the smaller it is, the agiler Bangpae could be. You deserve to try and feel the difference of it.Click them and you could see well.

Tensions are measured as belows, with spar skin side compressed.

Short dense line in the center hole where dimension start indicates bamboo node that had better be put a third of center hole. These lengths are a little bit longer than bridle finished status.You had better spar machining with these lengths.

To amuse Bangpae fully, we need good Bangpae, suitable reel and well fit string(silk)






I can't help respecting and bowing on the late Mr. Park,Man-ho who had been devoting himself on upgrading Korean reels for 35 years and has passed away Jan.2012. He was not an educated engineer over bachelor, but I came to know his works are extremely scientific ones.He's got most effective and scienfic design through his long trial and error.I think the reasons why No.6 drawing so complicated are first, to get bigger moment of innertia, next, to get the same effect with bamboo joint, and then to get sufficient bonding surface area near the cetral part, finally to get less weight near the cetral part where inertia efficiency is not so good.The way to know the specific gravity of used material is measured weight / (Width x Depth x Height) of using wooden rectangular parallelepiped. (units of each are gram, cm). For example, used material weighs 100(g) and size are 2(cm) x 2(cm) x 30(cm), the specific gravity is 100/120 = 0.83. You can design your own reel by yourself meets the material based on the principle of the aboves. If you feel No.1 dimension 23(mm) weak, you could enlarge to 25(mm).Design point is to put masses as possible as outer area under the precondition of structural stiffness.

I think everyone deserve to try it easily with 4- legs reel. At first stage, inside plate log doesn't need to be machined so complicately like the drawings.Router or other machine is used to do it. I have an over 1(kg) reel made in 1980s not by Park,M.H, it was not machined inside plate log like drawings.I feel something weird,not smooth while rotating it.

As a mechanic engineer and flier, I want to comment about its characteristics and notandum to be accustomed to use it.

1. Stick pole and 6 or 8 leg assembly are tightly inserted during flying and disassembled after flying.It means reel assembly rotates with same angular velocity. In case of right-hander, wear cotton gloves and grasp the stick pole with five all fingers of right hand and try to don't rotate right hand while rotate reel counterclockwise(when see left side).Lefthand palm face had better be perpendicular to the rotating axis and one of leg end must be hold with just three fingers, thumb,index finger,middle finger of lefthand, if not reel leg ends strike wristbone easily.The reason why wear cotton gloves is to get less rotating friction, kind of cotton bearing, not for reel stopping.You had better try to wind stacking tread on right side of reel circumference.

2. Advantages of Korean reel(We call it Earlle)

1) Comparatively quick winding speed.(about 3(m/s), when use 230(mm) diameter reel, 4~5 rps equals 230x3.14x4~5)

2) Maximum using of inertia moment occured by the weight of all components including thread.
Inertia is proportional to mr^2(where m is differential mass, r is the distance from rotating center). Modern Korean reel has been developed to maximize it in given condition under stiffness restriction.

3) Sudden thread releasing is possible. We call it Twigim means bouncing in Korean words.

Quick throwing legs side with left hand toward kite direction and pulling stick with right hand onto right thigh outside under string tension very high- in strong wind or during quick winding tracking), line released quickly and kite turns its head direction possibly 180 degree. Twigim is very powerful attacking method in line cut game can't be done with others  than Korean reel. It's kind of reverse sawing action compare to the normal sawing one happened during fast winding tracking toward opponent's. In other words, Twigim means quick alignment of reel rotating axis onto the vertual line made between flier and the point Bangpae floated in the sky. There are two kinds of it, full or half-Twigim. The full hits upper thigh outside, the half doesn't.

4) Winding distance, near no limitation.
Usually Korean fighter wind thread around 4~500 meters on the reel. But higher flier can do it longer.

5) Good to upper body muscle developement.
We can feel gradual growth of forearm and shoulder muscle.

3. Weak points
1) Very awkward at first stage.
It needs around a week for novice to accustomed to it, and easy to derailed at first. No kite connected exercize is useful to upgrade.
Korean fighters using about 950~970 gram reel, but at first,had better design,make, and use about 850 gram one.

2) Comparatively big
It needs extra reel box.

3) Hard to make accordingly expensive to buy.
Not so simple to make and 8 legs reel cost around 300(USD) made with ebony wood.

How to make Bangpae2012.03.01 00:42

The name Bang'Pae 防牌鳶 has been used at least for the last 300 years in Korea. It has shown up on "Ak-Hak-Sup-Ryoung" in 1713,  "Hae-Dong-Ga-Yo" in 1767 and "Ga-gok-Won-Ryu" in 1876. 



Korean calls Korean kite Bang'Pae because we think it looks like rectagular shield.BangPae means a shield in Korean.

The other names "Yon鳶" or "Ji-Yon紙鳶" also found in old books. In recent about five decades, "Bang'Pae-Yon" has become the most generic term represent "Center holed rectangular fighter kite" out of Cham-Yon,Dal-Yon,BangPae-Yon. The former both are regional names.

To recent Korean, "Yon" can be understood as "kite". All the kites in the world called  "bra bra-Yon" in Korean. Under this environment, "Bang'Pae" has replaced "Yon" to divide,point "Center holed rectagular kite" from all type of kites "Yon".

Two main Korean kites by shape are "Center holed rectangular one" and "With tail diamond shape kite".
I think to classify two, the former became "Bang'Pae-Yon", the latter "Gaori-Yon"

Currently,there are two types of fast moving controllable kites in this world, one is two string controllable stunt kite or quad-line, the other is that of one string. One string type divided into two sorts again,one is lozenge or diamond  group of Indian,Hongkong,American,Afghanistan,Pakistan,Tibetan, etc, the other did into rectangular includes Korean Bang'Pae,Japanese Buka,Tahara,etc.Special characteristics of Bang'Pae are broad three points bridle, and center hole,this shape is found nothing but in BangPae.Well made BangPae with kite reel winding speed around 2~3(m/s)shows first, extremely awesome horizontal, upward,and downward tracking performance, and then quick kite head turning performace with a slight line releasing,next float high in stable during no maneuvering action.The ingenious result of center hole helps to get fast stablization after string releasing that is very useful as a fighter. Flying BangPae with Korean reel made with fully natural materials is very helpful to our health and a good physical exercise as like flying two line controlled sports kite.

On the web, I saw a thread  that a novice Korean BangPae flier says he can't believe flying BangPae with Korean reel makes more get tired physically than shooting Korean bow.
In my personal opinion based on my experience, to do it around 3~4 hours is almost same amount of physical exercise ,get drowsy after each workout below.

- 2 hours slow swimming
- Mountain hiking slowly aroud 2~3 hours
- Skiing 3~4 hours
